WindTunnel is a patented technology developed by Vax.
In standard vacuum cleaners, dirt and dust gets picked up and spun around the brushbar and into the machine’s airflow. This takes the dust and deposits it into the dirt container.
When spinning around the brushbar, some of the dust will get spun out of the airpath and scattered back onto the carpet.
WindTunnel technology uses small suction ‘tunnels’ within the floor nozzle to lift and trap more dust which means carpets are left cleaner. Fewer passes over the carpet mean less effort for the customer.
Some questions to ask yourself before buying a vacuum cleaner:
How busy is your lifestyle?
WindTunnel technology reduces the scattering of dust back into the carpet, meaning you need to go over the same area fewer times in order to leave carpets clean. This means more time can be spent doing other things.
Do you have children or pets?
WindTunnel technology is ideal for busy homes as it lifts and traps more dirt from within carpet fibres – perfect for high traffic areas or where pets lie. The first Vax vacuum cleaner with WindTunnerl technology was the Vax Mach 7

Pre-treating your carpets prior to washing them tackles high traffic areas and even the most stubborn stains and ground in dirt to give the most effective clean.
Some carpet washers, including several from Vax, include a pre-treatment cleaning system to which specifically targets embedded dirt and stains and starts to work on breaking down problem areas before you start washing the carpet. These are ideal for areas that get a lot of traffic such as the foot of sofas, hallways, in front of doors or where pets lie.
How to pre-treat your carpets:
- Wave the pre-treatment applicator over the area you want to treat, pressing the trigger to release the pre-treatment solution spray.
- The pre-treatment formula immediately starts breaking down the embedded and ground in dirt, giving you a deeper clean.
- Simply, leave for 10 minutes and wash as normal.

Maintaining your machine is essential for the optimum performance of your carpet washer. Your carpet washer will be more effective and last longer if you maintain it on a regular basis.
Filter cleaning and replacement
You should clean your carpet washer filter after every use. This will remove any dirt, hair and residue left from washing the carpet. Filter replacement will need to take place every 6 months, depending on use.
Cleaning after use
The dirty water tank will need emptying and the filter washed after each use. The filter must be left to dry before it is put back into the machine. Ensure that your brush bars are free from dirt, hair and debris before your next use.
Maintaing your carpet washer:
A) Cleaning your filter
- Remove filter from dirty water tank
- Rinse filter with warm water. Wipe and leave to dry thoroughly before storing to prevent mildew from forming

B) Emptying dirty water
- Pull dirty water tank from base
- Empty soiled water and rinse with warm water. Leave to dry.

No Loss of Suction – What is it?
- Multi cyclonic technology provides better separation of dust particles from the airflow, maintaining suction for longer.
- Gives cleaning results that are good as the first time, every time. The cleaning performance when cleaning the first room in a home will be exactly the same as when cleaning the last room.
- Hassle-free maintenance – the large dust particles are spun out of the airpath and collected in the dust container so that only the smaller dust particles pass through the filter. This means that the filter needs cleaning less often.
- No suction is lost as the dust container gets full
- Large dust particles are spun out of the airpath and into the dust container, leaving only the fine dust to pass through the filter (see diagram)
Questions to ask yourself before choosing a vacuum cleaner:
- How many rooms do you have to vacuum in your home?
Units with No Loss of Suction clean as good as the first time, every time. This means that they are ideal for larger homes as they do not loose suction as the dust container gets full. From room to room, they will deliver consistent cleaning performance.
- How busy is your lifestyle?
No Loss of Suction technology means that large particles are spun out of the airpath and into the dust container, leaving only the fine dust to pass through the filter. This means that the filter needs cleaning less often, saving time and effort. It also means that it never has to be replaced.

Q: I have carpeted rooms throughout my home, which I vacuum on daily basis. However, a colleague has recently told me that the average carpet harbours millions of germs and bacteria, which a vacuum is unable to get rid of – a frightening thought bearing in mind my youngest has just started crawling. Is this true and, if so, is there a cheaper alternative to a hiring a professional carpet cleaner?
A: Unfortunately, your friend is right. According to ITCH (the Institute for Total Carpet Hygiene www.itch.org.uk), a neglected carpet contains more than four times its own weight in germs. Modern conveniences in our homes, like central heating and insulated windows, also provide the ideal breeding ground for bacteria, germs and bugs. ITCH also states that the average carpet can contain a wide variety of fibres, dead skin cells, insect body parts, animal hairs, dirt and bacteria – so with a little one crawling around, I would strongly advise getting your carpet seen to, fast.
I would recommend the Vax Rapide range, a fabulous range of easy to use carpet washers from Vax. The Rapide Deluxe is upright carpet washer with an on board tool for washing stairs, upholstery and car interiors. It features a rotating brush bar, which goes deep into the fibres to loosen and lift harboured dirt, toxins, germs and dust mites, and will leave your carpet looking refreshed and revitalised. And best of all, unlike hiring a professional, you can use it as often as you like at no extra cost!! The Vax Rapide Deluxe retails at £149.99.

House dust mites can be found in any home – now matter how rigorous the ‘nesting’ process was – and are the main triggers of allergies such as asthma and hayfever. These microscopic beasties thrive in warm, humid houses and feed on dust particles, namely human skin. However new mums shouldn’t worry, it’s easy to keep these mites at bay with a simple, regular cleaning routine that is safe to carry out around babies.
Although carpets are ideal for young children and cut the risk of bumps and scrapes, they can be a ripe breeding ground for dust mites and can contain more than four times their own weight in germs and bacteria. According to ITCH (Institute for Total Carpet Hygiene) the average carpet can contain a wide variety of fibres, dead skin cells, insect body parts, animal hairs, dirt and bacteria which is not good news for youngsters.
Dry vacuuming only removes the surface layer of dust and debris and the only way to effectively reduce the number of dust mites and bacteria living and breeding in carpets is to wash them. To protect sensitive babies from too much contact with dust mites it’s a good idea to wash your carpet more often than before – at least once every 3-6 months. This will keep mites under control and with accidental food spills and stray crumbs more likely with children around, it’s a good way to lift stains and keep carpets fresh.
Hiring a professional to wash your carpets is expensive and can cost you more than purchasing your own carpet washer which you can then use to refresh your carpets on a regular basis. Make sure you choose a good model that agitates deep into the carpet pile is lightweight and easy to fill up and empty. Look out for features such as additional tools to wash stairs and upholstery and flexible hoses that can be used on awkward areas.
The Vax Rapide Deluxe (£149.99) is an affordable upright carpet washer with a rotating brush bar which agitates deep into carpet fibres to loosen and lift harboured dirt, germs and dust mites to leave your carpet refreshed.
Vax V-025 Rapide carpet washer:
- Washes carpets
- Powerful motor helps carpets to dry quickly
- Rotating brushbar agitates deep into carpet fibres to loosen and lift embedded dirt and stains
- Lightweight, easy to store and manoeuvre
- Easy to fill, empty and use
- Handle lays flat for easy cleaning under and around furniture
Finally, make sure you open lots of windows while washing your carpets as dust mites will love the extra humidity, and leave them open for a few hours afterwards to ward off any stray mites and leave the room clean and fresh.
