Clean Carpets for Christmas

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Traditionally Spring was the favoured time of year for sprucing up your home, but these days it’s more likely to happen in the run up to Christmas, when relatives are due to visit and friends are coming over.

After all those rainy autumn days when your pets and family have trodden half the garden through the house, your carpets and rugs are likely to be one of the first things that need a good pre-Christmas clean.

There’s a few options for tackling this task. You can call in the professionals, or hire a carpet washing machine to use over a weekend, or you could buy one to use at your leisure. Using a professional cleaning company to come to your home is an easy option, but can be very costly. Hiring a machine is less expensive, but buying your own will save you money in the long run, because you can use it again and again. The other big advantage with buying a carpet washer is that you’re not tied down to a particular day to do the cleaning. You can choose to clean the upstairs carpets one day, then tackle the downstairs the following weekend.

If you’re entertaining lots of guests it’s also really useful to have a carpet washer on hand, as there’s bound to be a few spilt drinks or footprints by the end of the night. You can simply whip out the machine, suck up the spill and shampoo the area clean before it turns into a stain. This is an especially good idea if you’ve got cream or light-coloured carpets. Carpet washers are also invaluable to have on stand by if your washing machine floods or your freezer unexpectedly defrosts, as they can suck up the liquid quickly, before it becomes a problem.

Modern carpet washers use advanced deep cleaning technology to lift and clean carpet fibres, removing embedded grime, stubborn stains and odours that dry vacuum cleaners can’t reach. For the best performance look out for models with ‘heated cleaning’, which use heat generated by the machine to speed up the cleaning and drying process, and ’edge to edge cleaning’ for even suction all across the width of the floorhead, so carpets dry quickly right up to the edges.

Using a carpet washer is very satisfying if you’re house proud, because you can see the colour of the carpets change literally before your eyes as dirt you never even knew was there is sucked away. If you dry vacuum your carpets daily it can be quite disconcerting to see just how dirty the water is when you pour it away after washing, and you’ll certainly see your ’regularly cleaned carpets’ in a whole new light!

The suction action of the washer lifts up carpet fibres that have become flattened from being trodden on day after day, so carpets feel softer and more springy once they’re dry. They also smell a lot nicer too, so washing your carpets is a good way of freshening up the whole house instead of reaching for the air freshener!

A Perfect Match for Your Home

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

If you’re a regular viewer of Emmerdale, Coronation Street or This Morning, you may have spotted the new Vax TV advert during the ad breaks.  It features the Match range of carpet cleaners, which are designed to ‘make cleaning carpets child’s play’ and stars an adorable little girl (who are actually played by identical twins Keira and Sienna) who makes quite a mess of her mum’s carpets!

The idea with the Match range is to mix and match your preferred type of carpet cleaner with add-on kits that are designed to tackle particular problem areas in your house. These include kits tailored for homes with pets, or those that have particularly difficult stains, or those that need protecting against future damage. By picking the right type of cleaner for your home and then adding one or more kits, you can tailor make a carpet cleaning solution that best suits your particular needs.

The carpet cleaners in the Match range vary from the more manoeuvrable and lightweight ‘Classic’, for smaller homes and apartments, to the larger, more rugged ‘Power’, which pumps jets of cleaning solution into the carpet fibres for a really deep clean. They’re designed to be as easy as a regular vacuum cleaner to use and have powerful suction that sucks out the dirty water. This suction means they don’t leave carpets soggy and you can walk on the carpets again within a couple of hours.

The largest and latest kit is called ‘Pet & Stubborn Stains ’ and includes a pre-treatment applicator and special pre-treatment solution that gets to work on difficult stains before you use the machine to wash it. It also has a big bottle of Vax Ultra solution for use in the machine and Carpet Guard spray to protect carpets after washing. This kit is currently only available to buy direct from the Vax site, but will be out in high street shops next year.

Absolutely Amazing Carpet Cleaner

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The V-124 Dual V carpet cleaner from Vax is a  big hit with the team at the Absolute Gadget website, who gave it 9/10 in their recent tests. The tester states: “It would take us a lot (and we mean a lot) to get us off our Dyson vacuum cleaner addiction. But Vax has a new carpet cleaner that threatens to run the cyclonic sucker out of town.” They then go on to give the machine a thorough testing on the office’s dirty shag pile carpet.

Initially they struggle to get the hang of the controls, but after realising the trigger only needs to be held down for dispensing the solution when it’s needed they say: “the results were very impressive. While we would not say that the carpet was back to showroom condition (it had gone far beyond that a long time ago) the carpet looked respectable enough to invite guest back around again. Stains we thought were going to stay forever, had disappeared completely in some cases.”

The tests then involve trying the machine in rinse mode only and then cleaning the stairs. Again they are impressed with the results. Even in rinse mode, container after container of almost pitch black water was poured out of the dirty water container. “In both modes the water from the container is heated up before being applied to the carpet and this should help loosen dirt that an ordinary vacuum couldn’t pick up in years”.

A big worry for most people thinking of washing their carpets is whether the carpets will dry out again afterwards. According to Absolute Gadget, this isn’t a concern with this model. “The cleaner manages to suck most of the water back out, meaning that you don’t have to wait too long before you can step on the floor again.” So no soggy feet after cleaning with this machine!

The reviewer’s overall conclusion is: “while a beast of a machine, it is good looking too and really effective as a carpet cleaner.”

The V-124 Dual V is available at most electrical retailers such as Argos, Currys, Amazon etc, or you can buy it direct from the Vax website, along with extra cleaning solutions and spare parts.

Amazon Reviewers rate the V-123 Agility from Vax

Monday, May 18th, 2009

The V-123 Agility carpet washer has gained plenty of recommendations at Amazon.co.uk over the past few weeks, with all new customer reviews awarding it full marks. This model is one of a new generation of upright carpet washers from Vax that have heated cleaning technology and revolutionary SpinScrub brushes that clean deep into carpet pile. The result is carpets that look as good as new and are dry again within just a couple of hours. It’s versatile too, with a SpinScrub hand tool for cleaning upholstery, stairs and car interiors, and a handy CleanSurge button to release extra solution when you need it – ideal for tackling those stubborn stains and high traffic areas.

One reviewer tried out her new Agility on a piece a carpet that had recently been cleaned with a hired machine that had given her a lot of trouble. She was over the moon with the results: “the amount of dirt that came out was unbelievable, the colour of dark chocolate. The carpet was left nearly dry and we almost needed sunglasses, it was so bright!” As well great cleaning results, she loves the convenience of having her own machine at hand to use whenever she needs. Unlike hiring a machine, there’s no need to rush to get all the rooms in the house done at once.

Another Amazon reviewer chose the Agility to clean up their filthy carpets rather than another model they were considering that had some negative reviews. So they decided to spend a bit more on the Agility instead. Was it worth the extra money? This reviewer definitely thinks so: “that old saying is true ‘you get what you pay for’! I am SO glad I did buy this carpet cleaner.”

One lady had such good results from the Agility that their “husband now says we don’t need new carpets”. This demonstrates perfectly how washing your carpets can be a great way to save money and avoid the hassle having to buy and fit new ones. She adds that the Agility is “easy to use and excellent value for money”.

Another reviewer agrees: “This is really worth the money. Brought me 3 year old carpets up like new. Easy to use on carpets and furniture. The fact that the water is heated meant that the carpets were dry within a couple of hours.”

Customers that have previously only used a canister style of carpet washer are often amazed at how quick and easy to use the latest generation of upright models are. For instance, this reviewer says: “The last home carpet cleaner we had was the orange cylinder Vax many years ago – it worked well and lasted a long time but was pretty hard work.” After buying an Agility upright, the reviewer writes: “Just used this for the first time on a carpet in real need of cleaning – amazing. Easy to set up, easy to use and so very efficient!”

Another Agility user agrees: “We used it to clean a very dirty cream carpet – it’s much easier to use then the old orange VAX carpet cleaner! Just fill up the tank & plug it in & off you go.” They add that while the machine is heavier and bulkier than a canister, so you need a bit more storage space for it, “it did a brilliant job & left the carpet only slightly damp… it’s a brilliant thing to have.” Unlike many other upright models, the Agility has a folding handle to make it as easy to store away as possible.

Amazon Customers Recommend Vax Dual V Carpet Washer

Friday, March 13th, 2009

There have been plenty of recommendations for the V-124 Dual V ‘heated cleaning’ carpet washer over at Amazon.co.uk recently, with a majority of customers giving it top marks in their reviews. “This machine is absolutely fantastic,” says one Amazon customer “My beige carpet which has been down 7 years looks as though it has just been fitted, absolutely outstanding results. I highly recommend this cleaner… well done Vax!”

After using it to clean his kitchen carpet tiles, another customer agrees it is “an amazingly good cleaner” and left his carpet looking like new. While he recommends using earplugs for use and points out that the brushes will need cleaning thoroughly to get rid of hairs, he says “operation is quick and easy, covering a good area before refill”.

Another user of the site argues that while it’s “heavy to control in small places,” it is otherwise “an excellent cleaner, dries superb, would highly recommend this cleaner.” One customer remarks that she decided to buy her own carpet washer after borrowing a friend’s and being impressed by the results. After weighing up whether to buy a Vax or a Bissell, she decided on the Dual V because of its “fantastic price” and wasn’t disappointed: “brilliant, and so easy to use. As it has movable brushes and heated water, the results are even better than the cheaper models.”

Another customer who also bought the Dual V recently says it “works well for ordinary household use.” He advises that it may need a second clean to get out any stubborn stains but concludes that overall it’s a “Great machine” and “Great value deal through Amazon.”

Electric Carpet Cleaners – Are They Any Good?

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

A recent questioner on Yahoo Answers asked for opinions about electric carpet cleaners, as he had seen some by Bex Bissell and Vax costing around £60-£80 and wanted to know if they are any good.

There were mixed responses to this answer, with proponents for both brands giving their opinions – veronica m and glenys prefer Bissell while Blackgrumpycat says about his Vax: “I bought a Vax upright one for £59 and it works fine.” He does point out that he “can’t do the stairs with it as it has no hose attachment but for all the rest it seem so get the stains out.”

This should always be a consideration when you’re deciding which model of upright carpet washer to buy – If you want it to also clean stairs, or upholstery, make sure it comes bundled with the appropriate tools. However, if you do find that you don’t have the tools you need after you’ve bought the machine it’s well worth contacting the manufacturer to find out if you can buy these separately to upgrade your machine.

The ‘Best Answer’ to the question, as chosen by the forum’s voters, is given by Tony M who argues that the model you should choose “depends what you need to use it for. In my experience the lower price models are fine for general carpet washing, but if you’ve got really tough stains to get out or also want to be able to wash dirty sofa cushions, valet your car etc, it might be worth spending a bit more.” He goes on to recommend the Vax Dual V with heated cleaning, which has won a Which? magazine ‘Best Buy’ award and says there are some good deals around on this model at the moment. He comments: “It’s got amazingly powerful suction so gets your carpets clean and dry again really quickly, and has a powered scrub tool for doing upholstery etc. You won’t regret investing in one of these!”

For those on a tighter budget Tony M recommends the Vax Rapide Deluxe as an alternative, commenting that it is a “good, powerful all-rounder with a tool for doing stairs, upholstery, car seats etc.”

Don’t Move, Improve!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

With the housing market in crisis homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to improve what they’ve already got, as an alternative to moving house. If your carpets have seen better days, rather than shopping for new ones why not try giving your existing carpets a new lease of life by deep cleaning them? It’s a great way to extend carpet life and save you the expense and hassle of laying new carpets when yours start to look tired and dull.

The latest generation of ‘heated cleaning’ carpet washers make the process faster and easier than it’s ever been. Heat generated by the machine helps the washing process and speeds up carpet drying times so you can walk on your carpets within just a couple of hours. Deep cleaning your carpets not only brightens the colour and pattern, it helps to remove embedded dirt, dust mites and other allergens, which vacuum cleaners can’t get to. Plus, it puts a spring back in the pile and makes your whole home smell fresh too. And the good news is that deep cleaning with a Vax carpet washer is as easy as 1-2-3…

  • Step 1) Fill it up: Fill your carpet washer with water and the recommended cleaning solution.
  • Step 2) Get washing: Switch on the machine and use the controls to apply the water and cleaning solution mix then suck up the dirty water. Repeat across the carpet until cleaning is complete.
  • Step 3) Empty it out:  Pour the dirty water from the tank down the drain and prepare to be amazed at the colour of the water. Then stand back and admire your fresh, clean carpets!

With good quality carpet washers available as cheeaply as £99.99, deep cleaning is an easy and affordable way to have carpets you can be proud of this spring. Once you’ve Vaxed your carpets back to life, keep your washer at hand to suck up any accidental spills between washes and help avoid staining.

National Carpet Cleaning Day – January 10th 2009

Monday, December 15th, 2008

10th January 2009 is National Carpet Cleaning Day in the UK.

A recent survey asking people about their carpet cleaning habits revealed some alarming results…

  • While most people (88%) vacuum their house at least once a week, almost a third have never washed their carpets.
  • Those that do wash their carpets, do so rarely, with half admitting to getting round to the job only once every 2-3 years or less.

These facts might not seem too worrying, until you get down to the nitty gritty of what horrors could be lurking in an unwashed carpet – e.g. did you know that a typical carpet harbours millions of dust mites and a neglected carpet can contain up to 4x its own weight in dirt, dust mites and their waste!

As part of its research into carpets, the Institute of Total Carpet Hygiene (ITCH) took samples of carpet from living rooms after they had been dry vacuumed, and still found bacteria, dirt, pollen grains, skin cells, rodent hairs and insect fragments all buried among the fibres.

This highlights the fact that dry vacuuming only removes the surface layer of dirt and dust. To  remove embedded grime and bacteria you need to deep clean them with a carpet washer. This is particularly important if you have babies or children who play on carpets.

Washing carpets will also help get rid of dust mites, pollen and other particles buried deep in the fibres that can trigger allergy symptoms such as sneezing and wheezing. Washing is also a good way to look after your carpets and save you money over the longer term. This is because regular washing removes the ground-in dirt that flattens and damages fibres, so you shouldn’t have to replace them so soon.

These days domestic carpet washers are designed for maximum ease of use and fall within a range of price prices, starting from as little as £99.99 up to around £330 for a top-of-the-range multifunction heated cleaner. Some models also clean hard floors and some have tools for removing stains or for cleaning stairs and upholstery.

The Festive Season is Nearly Here… Are Your Carpets Ready

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

The turkey is ordered, the presents are wrapped and you’ve checked the Christmas tree lights are working. The next job is to make sure your home is clean, bright and suitably festive for your holiday guests. One area you certainly don’t want to fall down on is dull, lifeless carpets.

A thorough deep clean will bring them back to life by removing the trodden-in dirt that dry vacuuming can’t get to and that leaves them flat and lifeless. Washing carpets brightens the colour and pattern and revitalises the pile, making the carpet springy again. It also removes bacteria and other hidden nasties, like dust mites and pollen that can trigger allergies, so the room is hygienic for babies, children and the whole family. Odours are neutralised too, so your home will smell fresh and clean.

Hiring a professional cleaner to deep clean your carpets can be expensive and a hassle, plus it costs you every time you have them cleaned. However, with carpet washers ranging from under £100 there are quick and easy deep cleaning solutions available. In addition to washing your carpets, a carpet washer makes cleaning up spills quick and easy, and prevents staining – a certainty to happen when you entertain. Carpets typically get a lot of wear and tear during the festive season, so a carpet washer is invaluable for freshening them up again once the last guests have gone.

If storage space is at a premium, choose a compact carpet washer with a folding handle that is easy to store away. For homes with little or no storage space, you may prefer a lightweight, portable spot cleaner with a wash tool and flexible hose for cleaning your stairs, seats and upholstery and car interiors and problem areas on your carpet.

For busy homes with larger areas of carpet to wash, choose a carpet washer with large capacity tanks for clean and dirty water. For busy homes that need faster cleaning and drying times, a heated cleaning model is best, as your carpets will back in use within just a few hours.

For homes with a combination of floor types, you might want to consider a carept washer that can also wash hard floors.

Washing Carpets is Easy and Affordable!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Deep cleaning is an ideal way to freshen up a tired-looking carpet, brighten the colour and put a spring back into the pile. It also helps prolong the life of a carpet by removing the ground-in dirt that flattens and damages carpet fibres, which dry vacuuming alone can’t reach. All the family will feel the benefit too, as washing gets rid of unwelcome guests like pollen, bacteria and dust mites that thrive in warm, humid environments and can trigger allergies.  As hiring a professional cleaner to deep clean your home can be costly – around £70-£100 for two average sized rooms – it makes more economic sense to invest in a carpet washer. With models available from under £100, upright carpet washers are as easy to use as a regular dry vacuum and provide an affordable way to wash carpets and suck up spills.

The V-024 Rapide Classic is a lightweight, upright carpet washer with a static brushbar that gently loosens and lifts dirt from carpet pile. Easy to fill, empty, use and store, the Rapide’s handle lays flat to the floor so you can clean under and around furniture really easily. Also in this range are the V-025 Rapide and V-026 Rapide Deluxe, which both have a rotating brushbar that agitates carpet pile to lift and remove ground-in dirt and stains. The Deluxe has all the features of the Rapide, plus a wash tool and flexible hose for refreshing stairs, upholstery and car interiors. In addition to a wash tool, the V-028 Rapide PowerJet Pro has an extra wide cleaning path so it’s good for washing larger areas of carpet. It has a static brushbar that agitates pile to dislodge dirt and PowerJet technology that pumps jets of water deep into carpet fibres, and also a wash tool for cleaning stairs and upholstery. Topping the range is the V-027 Rapide XL, which features two contra-rotating brushbars to deep clean carpet fibres and groom pile, as well as extra large capacity clean and dirty water tanks.  The V-033 Rapide Compact is the newest addition to the Rapide range. It’s a portable, lightweight spot cleaner with a hand tool and hose for washing stairs, upholstery and car interiors.

All Rapide carpet washers come with Vax carpet washing solutions that are specially formulated to hygienically clean deep into carpet, lifting dirt and stains, and preventing odours. Vax solutions dry leaving a fresh fragrance without any sticky residue, helping to prevent resoiling.
